Private center

By Estefany Padilla, 1r Batxillerat B

I opened my eyes and I looked around my bedroom, I looked at my partner and she

was reading a book with the title “How to quit drugs”. I got up at 8 o’clock, I walked

down the stairs of the double bed. Then I heard someone knocking at the door. My

partner was very nervous, but I didn’t want to know why she was so stressed. I got

dressed and washed my teeth and my face very fast. Suddenly, the door opened at

half-past 8, we stayed in the hall. There were a lot of people. All of them were

wearing the same suits as us.

There was a woman who was wearing a suit that made her look like a sergeant, she

was screaming a lot, saying: “Come babies, it is time to eat, if you don’t like the food,

it is not my problem!”. We were queuing to eat breakfast, Ididn’t know what was

happening, but I thought that it was better to follow the others, and not make

questions. I think I am in a reformatory or a private school. We wore the same

clothes, no place to escape, and everything needed to stay under control and in silence.

We were eating cereals and milk for breakfast. I was eating, I felt observed so I

turned my head to look around the dining room, I saw a boy shaking his hand to me.

I don’t know who he was.

After breakfast, I went to the rest area. The boy came next to me and said: “Hello,

how are you?”. I tried to answer him and I said: “Sorry, but I don’t know who you are.

I have tried, I feel you are someone I know in the past, but I don’t remember

anything”, and he started explaining that he was my best friend, we were all the time speaking to each other. When he looked at me, my face was very confused, he continued explaining that if this were to happen, I would be told that you have a

tattoo behind your neck covered by your hair. It was a dove with an olive branch in

its beak, flying over the world and with the word freedom on the side.

I started thinking about this, immediately I said to him that I needed to go to the

bathroom. When I was there, I looked in the mirror and there was the tattoo, just as he

explained it and finally I remembered everything. Just a week ago, I had consumed

something I shouldn’t have and I went back to the hospital and from there I woke up

again in this place.

I am in a lunatic center.

Dear twelve year old me

By Ana Rodríguez, 2n Batxillerat

Hey twelve year old me,

now you are eighteen.

l’m here to tell you about everything l’ve seen.

We’ve seen our body change a lot

and we don’t hate it anymore.

We’ve seen some friends come and go

but their stories you’ll always know.

We’ve been through some heartbreak

both platonic and romantic.

We felt so many feelings

both tiny and gigantic

through it all our mental health went up and down

but now a days we smile more than we frown.

We weren’t perfect

but at least we tried

and all those experiences stretched our mind.

l’m not sure if I am where you thought I would be

but l’m proud of how it went

and l’m proud to be me.

Yes, sometimes school really does suck

but don’t you worry, we get through the mack.

And five years from now when I’m twenty-three

I can’t wait to see what becomes of me

So twelve year old me just keep holding on

and take a deep breath to see a new down.
